A Romanian woman said she became the world’s youngest grandmother two years ago, at the age of 23.
The woman, Rifca Stanescu, gave birth to her daughter Maria when she was 12 years old. Stanescu told Maria not to follow in her footsteps, but Maria gave her a grandchild when Maria was just 11.
Stanescu is now 25. Her 2-and-a-half-year-old grandson is already engaged to an 8-year-old girl. She said she wanted something more for her daughter.
“I am happy to be a grandmother but I wished something else for Maria – and something else for me,” she said.
Stanescu said “marrying young” is a tradition in the Romanian gypsy culture.
“I did not try to stop my daughter getting married because this is the tradition, it’s what happens,” she said.
Stanescu also said that she eloped with jewellery salesman Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13.
She fled with Ionel because she was worried her father would force her to marry someone else in the village of Investi in Romania.
Her mother, also named Maria, became a great grandmother at just 40 years old.
