Australia Floods Slowly Recede

Reports say the water level in eastern Australia is slowly receding. However, the officials advised the people who settle around the area to stay away from roads damaged by the terrible floods.

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, the worst hit cities, remained close to its recent peak of 9.2 meters (more or less 30 feet). Some residents kept staying in their home as many roads were still in underwater as a result of the flood. They could only use boat to travel.

The officials of the government ordered the residents to keep away from the flooded areas. Queensland Acting Chief Superintendent Brian Codd said that he kept seeing incidents of people driving through flooded area, getting stuck and having to be rescued. “We know that people feel confined and are increasingly frustrated at not being able to get from place to place easily, but I cannot stress enough how unsafe some road infrastructure is after being flooded for days,” he added.

Craig Wallace, Queensland State’s minister of main roads, said that the degree of damage remained vague. “It needs months or even years to repair all of this damage,” he said.

Rain kept falling in certain areas, prolonging problems in some of the worst hit places, Queensland’s government said. The deluge cost 10 people their life since November 30, mostly swept away by swift waters.

Death Toll Rises Caused by Flood in Australia

More than 22 cities and towns throughout the region of Queensland dealt with weeks of heavy rains. The people couldn’t avoid the rising of the water level. As a result of the flood, a widespread destruction attacked the region.

The officials said that there were three people who were found dead during the flood. Approximately 200,000 people had been forced to leave the settlement and to find the closest evacuation centers so they could get some food and take a rest. The second largest catchment region in Australia, Fairbairn Dam, couldn’t retain the water so that the water was spilled. It became a problem for the people who wanted to go out from the region.

In Rockhampton city, the Fitzroy River that overflowed forced the government to close Capricorn and Bruce highways to the east and sout, as well as the local airport.

“Rockhampton is now completely stranded — a town of 75,000 people, no airport, rail or road,” According to Queensland Premier Anna Bligh Rockhampton is now completely stranded. “A town of 75,000 people, no airport, rail or road,” she said to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

Mr. Dawson would ask the army to resupply foods for the victims. The food resupply becomes an important thing in Jericho and Rockhampton which are located in Central Queensland. Today, the National Retail Association started to distribute foods from Gladstone to Rosslyn Bay.

Severe Flood Hits Australia

At least 20 towns in Queensland, Australia, have been sank as a result of the severe flood that hit the area. More than 2,000 people are evacuated because the flood is getting worse. The flood covers an area larger than the combination of France and Germany. Among the towns which are severly hit by the flood, Rockhampton is the one that hugely effected by the rising of the water level.

The water reaches nine metres (30 feet) on Monday and is predicted to reach its peak at 9.4 metres on Wednesday. The Australian government stated that the flood disaster can last as long as a month. “This is a major natural disaster and recovery will take a significant amount of time,” said PM Julia Gillard. The government has prepared grants of up to $25,000 for small business and more than $1000 for every adult. PM Julia Gillard added, “All in all, with commonwealth government assistance flowing, it will be in the order of many hundreds of millions of dollars”.

The airport is closed due to this disaster. The road heading to the area which hit by the flood is also cut out. In addition, the power supplies cannot deliver the electrical power to town. 10 thousand people have been evacuated to avoid the flood.

Local residents told that there had been panic-buying in the city. The people tried to keep the stock of foods and fuels as much as possible.

Besides the water level, the people have to be aware of the snake bites. Brad Carter, the Mayor of Rockhampton, said that snakes have been found swimming at people’s feet as they make their way through the waters. “I know one guy who killed four snakes this morning, one of which was a Taipan – the more it bites, the more it injects venom that could easily kill”, he added.
